Sustaining the Mission Through Fundraising

Putting the “fun” in fundraisers from the mid-1970s days of bake sales and garage sales to current events focused on the students and their stories of accomplishments.

  • 1984 - 1997: Margo Ahrens runs an annual nut saleStudent speaking at event
  • 1992 - 2012: Annual Canterbury Run/Walk for Literacy, initiated by Harvey and Trudy Barash of Canterbury Booksellers
  • 1997 - 1999: Series of benefit concerts included The Nylons and the New Orleans Preservation Hall Jazz Band, sponsored by TDS Telecom
  • 1999 - 2001: Criterium on the Square bike race, sponsored by TDS Telecom 2002-2005: Adult Spelling Bee for Literacy
  • 2006 - 2012: Literacy 24/7, a “read-a-thon,” hosted by Borders Books West
  • 2011 - 2023: Reading Between the Wines evening party, including student writings and auction
  • 2014 - 2023: Literacy: A Sustainable Future, later renamed Growing Through Literacy, a daytime gathering to raise awareness and funds
  • 2014 - 2018: Annual used book sale
  • 2014 - 2017: Central Park Sessions, Literacy Network designated as one of the beneficiaries
  • 2015 - 2016: Busking for Books, featured local musicians doing benefit concerts throughout the city
