Omega Alumna Spotlight: Rhonda

Meet Omega School alumna Rhonda! In 2010, Rhonda earned her GED with Omega, which is now a program of Literacy Network. We recently caught up with her to learn about her experience and hear updates on where she is today:

Why did you decide to attend Omega?
I participated in the Odyssey Project and when I finished, I wanted to pursue my college career. I had my diploma from high school, but I didn’t have my transcripts and could not retrieve them because the school that I attended was a private school that had closed. I was told that I needed to complete it all over again through the GED.

Describe your experience with Omega
I would go four times a week, Monday through Thursday. At the same time, I was working full time. I overcame a lot of self-doubt and personal hardships. But I was inspired by Omega because I knew I wanted to advance my career. I knew I wanted to be a good role model, not just for my children, but in community.

Describe how it felt to get your GED
Obtaining my GED was the most rewarding experience. It caused me to have a newfound confidence about things— that maybe when you’re older, you may feel like you have a barrier, but it really gave me a successful outlook and a newfound perseverance.

What have you done since?
I moved to Michigan and got my degree at Macomb Community College and now I’m at Madonna University getting my bachelor’s in legal studies, which I will have on May 15. I’m interning at the Macomb County Circuit Court. After I graduate in May I’m going to take an LSAT workshop, take the LSATs and then apply for law school. I want to advocate for elders, special need individuals, veterans, and employees. I know this is a cliché, but I want to advocate for the underdog, because I felt for so long that I was one.

What advice would you give others?
I would say to Omega students to be content with where you are, don’t compare yourself to other people, but also at the same time look for ways to grow. Put your whole heart into what you’re doing. Don’t underestimate yourself.
