ESL Instructor & Coordinator 

Literacy Network

The Instructor/Coordinator is a full-time employee who provides ESL instruction and bilingual (English/Spanish) student services coordination in collaboration with the Director of ESL Group Instruction, Director of ESL Group Tutoring, and community partners throughout Dane County. 

This position will deliver communicative, student-centered, and goal-based language instruction in group class settings, in-person or on Zoom, to prepare English Language Learning (ELL) adults with the communication skills they need to reach their work, family, and educational goals. Additionally, the position will provide student enrollment, re-enrollment, assessment, and persistence support for the Community English and Community Literacy programs. The Instructor/Coordinator will also assist with front desk coverage and other student services tasks as assigned.

Immediate Supervisor: Director of ESL Group Instruction; collaboration with Director of ESL Tutoring 

Hours: Full time at 36.5 hours/week  

  • Schedule: 
    • To be determined by semester with the supervisor, but will include: 
      • Monday front desk coverage 8:30-12:00 
      • Two or more evening classes/week 
      • Option of 4-day work week  
      • Some additional weeknight or Saturday morning shifts may be required  
    • Hybrid/WFH options: Hybrid work-from-home/on-site as per employee handbook and depending on class schedule. Fridays are work-from-home for all scheduled staff.  

Pay: $21/hour plus $1/hour bilingual differential. Literacy Network offers full health, dental, vision, and retirement benefits as part of a generous benefits package in partnership with Tandem HR.

Responsibilities: 

1. ESL Instruction 40% 

  • Provide communicative instruction to ELL adults from a wide range of personal and educational backgrounds. Develop student-centered instructional strategies, curriculum, and lesson materials for use in teaching multilevel groups. Arrange for appropriate substitute instruction when needed. 
  • Implement retention strategies and conduct student and program evaluations. 
  • Collect and submit program data, including registration, attendance, and surveys, accurately and in a timely manner. 
  • Assist in providing customized reports to program partners as applicable regarding student achievements and feedback. 

2. Community English (CE) Student Services Coordination 40%  

  • Manage Community English new student referrals from partners, applying critical thinking throughout rolling enrollment to balance students’ needs with partners’ program goals. 
  • Complete the registration process for Zoom students by phone and in person as needed 
  • Send reminder and persistence support calls, texts, and emails to CE students 
  • Manage CE waitlists promptly according to ESL Group Class waitlist policies 
  • Keep CE rosters organized and up-to-date and make note of class and program trends 
  • Enter student data (program enrollments & exits, employment and achievement updates) in our Apricot database on a regular basis and in accordance with org-wide deadlines  
  • Calculate and share weekly attendance data for CE partners as needed

  • Complete end-of-semester forms with CE students who need extra support 

3. ESL Tutoring Student Services Coordination 10% 

  • Manage waitlists for our largest ESL tutoring program, Community Literacy (CL)  
  • Promptly enroll students from the waitlist based on student availability and open class spots 
  • Update student data (program enrollments & exits, contact information, PEP, ESF) when enrolling or dropping students 
  • Create student folder and student summary for each newly enrolled student 
  • Communicate enrollment updates to class interns and program manager 
  • Follow-up with students who want to switch or drop classes during and between semesters. Update waitlisted students’ availability and interest each semester

4. General Office Duties / Agency Representation 10%

  • Support colleagues in staffing the Literacy Network front desk and assisting learners in person and on the telephone as needed, including weekly shift on front desk  
  • Participate in all-staff meetings and trainings  
  • Engage in professional development opportunities as applicable and as schedule permits 
  • Act as a representative of Literacy Network in the community, on behalf of our student population and in service to community members seeking information on our programs and your areas of expertise

They are flexible and well-organized, and can work well in multicultural teams and with diverse constituencies. They are self-motivated, persistent, and remain balanced under pressure. The following skills and attributes are required:  

  • Certificate or degree in Education, Applied Linguistics, TESOL, Bilingual Education, reading instruction, foreign language instruction, and/or work experience in education, language instruction, workforce development, or adult literacy 
  • 1+ year of language instruction experience preferred 
  • Fluency (native or near native level) in Spanish & English required  
  • Experience working with adults from diverse backgrounds 
  • Excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills 
  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills 
  • Excellent organizational skills  
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office and Google Drive  
  • Ability to think strategically and critically  
  • Proven record of persistence in learning and meeting goals
