Becoming a Volunteer Tutor

Information Session

To become involved as a volunteer, please attend an information session. View our calendar for a list of dates and locations for information sessions. To reserve your spot, please call Lynn Pawelski at 608-244-3911 or email volunteer@litnetwork.org.

Personal Tutoring

To be a personal tutor, volunteers register for a 9-hour training (spread over three dates) in either Basic Literacy or English as a Second Language.  The training prepares tutors to write individualized lesson plans to meet the language and literacy needs and goals of their learner.  Tutoring takes place at various times in many different locations throughout Dane County.  We ask that tutors and learners make a commitment to meet 2 hours per week for a minimum of 6 months.  Schedule and location are two significant factors that we consider when making matches which provides flexibilty to both tutors and learners.

Community Tutoring

At Community Literacy sites, tutors and learners meet together for two hours a week to work on ESL and literacy skills.  Community Literacy tutors do not need to take one of the trainings before they begin tutoring because lesson plans are provided on site.  Free childcare is also available for learners and tutors who come to the program.  Literacy Network asks that tutors make a four-month commitment as a Community Literacy tutor.

The Community Literacy program is held at the following times and locations:

For both tutoring programs, you do not need to know a foreign language or have teaching experience to be a tutor. The diversity of our tutors enriches the lives of our learners and the tutoring programs at Literacy Network.  All volunteers must attend an information session, complete a volunteer application, and agree to a background check before tutoring

Interested in these exciting volunteer opportunities? If you would like to register for an information session or if you would like more information on how to become a tutor, please call (608) 244-3911 or e-mail the Volunteer Manager at volunteer@litnetwork.org.
