Salary Range: Successful interns receive $600 as well as a letter of recommendation from Literacy Network.

We are recruiting ESL Program interns to oversee our Community Literacy programs these semesters:

  • For Summer 2018, apply before April 29
    • Training will be May 22-23
    • Summer semester is June 4-Aug 25
  • For Fall 2018, apply before July 29
    • Training will be the evenings of Sept 4-5
    • Fall semester is Sept 17-Dec 15
  • For Spring 2019, apply before November 18
    • Training dates TBA
    • Spring semester is Jan -May

Looking for a fun way to sharpen your lesson-planning, supervision and communication skills as you help others in your community? LitNet Interns are responsible for the success of their assigned weekly ESL program session, which provides one-to-one tutoring for adults improving their reading, writing and English-speaking skills. In each session, 8 students and 8 volunteer tutors work in pairs on personalized lessons you have created for each student, using our extensive educational library and resources. Our Interns enjoy a positive, supportive environment in which staff, volunteers, students, and other interns all work together to make our programs effective and enjoyable. We are recruiting one intern for each of the following sessions (be sure to indicate for which you are applying):

  • Monday nights, 6-8pm at Literacy Network (701 Dane Street)
  • Tuesday mornings 10am-12noon at Literacy Network (Focus on Computer Literacy; Microsoft Office, email, internet)
  • Tuesday nights, 6-8pm at Literacy Network (701 Dane Street)
  • Tuesday nights, 6-8pm at the Dane County Parent Council (2096 Red Arrow Trail, Fitchburg)
  • Wednesday mornings, 9-11am at Literacy Network (701 Dane Street)
  • Wednesday nights, 6-8pm at Literacy Network (701 Dane Street)
  • Thursday nights 6-8pm at Literacy Network (701 Dane Street)(Focus on Workplace English)
  • Saturday mornings, 9-11am at Literacy Network (701 Dane Street)

Internship responsibilities:

  • Spend 6-8 hours weekly at LitNet (during office hours) writing personalized, goal-based lesson plans for 8 adults
  • Manage the 2-hour Community Literacy session (arrange room, track attendance, match students with tutors)
  • Provide support for tutors during lessons
  • Tutor students as needed when your session is short tutors
  • Make weekly reminder phone calls to students in your session (frequently in Spanish)
  • Provide assistance, if needed, in the childcare room
  • Attend at least one professional development in-service

Interns are required to:

  • Possess reliable transportation (some session locations are not easily accessible by bus)
  • Be responsible, mature, patient and have great communication skills
  • Attend both Intern Training sessions
  • Commit to working 6-10 hours weekly, including class time, the entire semester

Preferred candidates will have previous experience with:

  • ESL lesson planning
  • Adult education
  • Working with people of other cultures
  • Speaking more than one language

**NOTE** Payment for this internship is only available to those eligible to work in the US.
