Madison WI - March 21, 2017
An exclusive collection of personal short essays written by students of literacy will be released for the first time at Literacy Network's upcoming event, Reading Between the Wines. The collection, entitled "If I Could . . ." will showcase writings from dozens of adult learners in literacy classes offered at Literacy Network. The writings will cover a broad range of personal experiences, including those related to themes of family life, career success, and the refugee experience. The collection offers an intimate perspective of the over 1 in 7 adults in Dane County who struggle with low literacy.
One author to be featured in "If I Could . . ." is a Literacy Network learner named Reina. Reina writes about her struggle with low English literacy in trying to raise a family:
What I want to achieve in my life is to be a good Mother. Because I have two wonderful children, they are my life. My wish is for them to be successful and happy in their lives.
For my husband and me it has been difficult to raise our children in this country for culture and language that is diferent from ours. . . . Not speakin English is a great barrier for me. When my oldest son was diagnosed with Autism, I was very frustrating because not only did I need to learn in English, now I also need to learn about autism.
I remember feeling ashamed when I when to the Doctor and my son's school because I did not speak English and I cold not communicate with the staff of the school and clinics. . . . I decided to start studying English and my friend told me about Literacy Network. They gave me this opportunity and I was very happy because I was going to learn a new language.
I would like my children to like studying and can graduate from the university. I know it's going to be very dificult but not impossible. I very nervous because I immigrant. I want to continue learning about the culture and language of this contry. To be able to support my children better. I know that dificult times await us. But I hope to see one day my dream comes true. I want my children to be honest men, responsible workers and kind.
In addition to the collection of student stories, Reading Between the Wines will feature multiple adult learners sharing their stories in person for the event audience. This event will be held on April 27 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Middleton, starting at 5:45PM. A full dinner, wine tasting, and silent auction are included in the ticket reservation price.
Literacy Network, host of this annual event, is a non-profit organization working to improve adult literacy in Dane County.
